Polk County runs about 744 square miles. Roughly two thirds of it is forest, most of that on the west side toward the Coast Range. The eastern third is valley floor. About a third of the whole county sits in farm production, and most of that acreage is cropland.
Polk County ranks in the state's top ten for grapes, Christmas trees and grass seed. Vineyards climb the hills north and east of Dallas. Between the working farms sit small acreages, hobby pasture and wooded homesites. Those are the parcels that go to brush first, because nobody runs equipment over them every year.
A clearing job on that kind of ground starts with what you want back. Some owners want the whole parcel opened, others just the useable half. Our excavator digs stumps out as part of the job, and we rough the cleared ground level. When clearing comes ahead of a build, lot clearing takes the footprint and the driveway first.
Rickreall Creek rises on Laurel Mountain in the Coast Range and runs straight through Dallas. It carries on east past Rickreall and drops into the Willamette River at Eola. The old name for the stream was La Creole, and the town still uses it on LaCreole Drive. Creek banks, ditch lines and low fence rows are where blackberry gets its start.
Himalayan blackberry is the most widespread problem weed in western Oregon. It spreads two ways at once. Canes root wherever the tips touch down, and the root crown resprouts after the top is cut off. That is why a mowed patch is back the next summer.
We take the mass down with the mulcher head and dig root balls out with the excavator. Keeping it gone means mowing or mulching the same ground again on a schedule. Blackberry removal is its own job on a place that has been let go for years. Work right at the water gets planned with the owner, because Oregon has rules for streams.
Dallas grew up on timber. A mill ran at Uglow Avenue and Monmouth Cutoff Road from 1906 onward. Weyerhaeuser took the site over in 2002 and closed it in 2009. Logging camps worked the hills west of here at Falls City, Black Rock and Valsetz.
That history still shows on the ground. Cutover hillsides came back in dense second growth, and fir seedlings keep pushing out into open ground. Oregon white oak was the valley's signature tree, and less than a tenth of its historic habitat is left. Where fire stopped running through, fir grows up over the oaks and shades them out.
Owners with oak ground often want the fir and the brush pulled back off it. That is brush and undergrowth clearing, and the mulcher head does it without a burn pile. On old cutover ground the same pass opens the understory back up. We work around the trees you want kept and take what crowds them.
Winters here are wet from about November through February, and the ground holds water. Hill soils around Dallas are red clay loams over basalt, which turn greasy when soaked. Machines mark up soft ground and can sink into it. Late spring through early fall is the easier window for heavy clearing.
Backyard burning in Polk County typically runs March 1 to June 15 and October 1 to December 15. Even inside those windows a day can close for weather or air quality. A summer ban usually follows in mid June. Mulching sidesteps that question, since the material stays on site as chips.
Once Oregon's fire season is on, the state forestry district covering Polk County typically posts regulated use rules. Those can limit power equipment hours, and we plan the day around whatever level is posted. Oregon also typically wants 811 utility locates two business days before ground-disturbing work. On foothill homesites, defensible space clearing is the job most people want done before summer.
