Woodburn grew up on the eastern part of French Prairie, at the north end of the Willamette Valley. This is farm country, and a field left alone does not stay open for long. Blackberry takes the fence lines first, then brush and young trees close in on field edges and farm lanes. Land clearing in Woodburn often means taking that ground back.
Willamette Valley Land Clearing is based in Lebanon, and we come up the valley for work around Woodburn. Land clearing is our main work: brush and small trees off lots and acreage, with stumps dug out. We also run forestry mulching and blackberry removal with the same machines. The city's own history says the name Woodburn was supposedly inspired by a large fire in a nearby woodlot. The town carried that name by the time it was incorporated in 1889. With its cane berry fields, Woodburn crowned itself the Berry Center of the World in 1923.
The fields around town grew marionberries, strawberries, pole beans and hops. Nearby Donald started out as a hop-growing community. French Prairie is still an important farming area of the Willamette Valley. When a berry field or an orchard stops being worked, blackberry and brush move in along the edges.
Young trees follow, and after a few seasons the old rows are hard to find. Our Bobcat skid steer and our excavator both run a forestry mulcher head. Brush and young trees get ground up where they stand. Brush clearing opens the field edges back up, and the excavator digs out the old stumps.
The Woodburn soil series shares the town's name, and Woodburn soils occur throughout the Willamette Valley. The typical profile is Woodburn silt loam, very deep and moderately well drained. The USDA lists its uses as berries, orchards, cannery crops, grain, hay and pasture. Its native vegetation is Douglas-fir, oak and grass.
That soil has a catch for machine work. Its water table sits at its highest from December to March. Soft ground takes ruts from tracks and tires, and ruts in a field are slow to fix.
So we plan machine work around the wet months. Late spring through early fall is the easiest window, since the ground is firm. We look at your ground first and set a date when the soil can carry the machines.
On farm ground around Woodburn, blackberry shows up where the tractor stopped going. Fence lines and field corners fill in first. Left uncut, invasive Himalayan blackberry keeps pushing out into the open field.
Our machines take a blackberry mass down to the ground, and the brush rake pulls out root balls. Blackberry comes back from root crowns left in the soil, so one pass is rarely the end of it. Repeat brush hogging or mulching keeps it down after that.
Mill Creek runs through Woodburn on its way to the Pudding River at Aurora. Our machine work stays on the upland side, along field edges and fence lines above the bank. Ground near the creek or the river gets planned with you before any work starts.
French Prairie runs between the Willamette River and the Pudding River, north of Salem. Gervais, St. Louis and St. Paul began as French Canadian settlements there. From Woodburn, Route 214 heads southeast toward Mount Angel, and Route 219 runs northwest to St. Paul. Monitor shares the 97071 ZIP code with Woodburn and is surrounded by farmland.
A rural homesite out here may sit at the end of a long farm lane. Blackberry and brush close in from both sides until a truck scrapes its mirrors on the way in. Driveway and access road clearing cuts that growth back from the edges and opens the lane again.
Building on a rural parcel starts with an open site. Lot clearing takes brush and small trees off the house site and the access. Our excavator digs out the stumps. The material gets mulched in place or raked into piles, whichever suits your plans.
